French Employees Required to Shut Off E-Mail after 6pm

Long gone are the days when it was thrilling to turn on your computer and suddenly hear that disembodied voice proclaim "You've got mail !"  A recent market survey revealed that the average corporate or professional employee sends and receives 105 e-mails a day.  Yikes!  And that's not counting text messages, instant messaging, and posts on social media.

Study Shows Lawyers are Sleep-Deprived

At many Barristers seminars, we frequently talk about the landmark study at Johns Hopkins University that showed that, of all the occupations studied, lawyers were the most vulnerable to depression, suicide, and addiction.  Now another study for the National Health Interview Survey says that lawyers are the second most sleep-deprived occupation in the United States.  (Does this come as a surprise to any of the lawyers reading this post?)  Home health aides were first on the list, with police officers placing third.

Like Wyatt Earp, Who Will You Thank for Always Being There?

It took me over 40 years to learn the meaning of life.  Family.  A loving, caring, joyous, supportive family, that is.  A family that often encompasses our dearest and closest friends. For years I thought that my happiness would be realized through a career in academia, and then as a counselor.  I've done both in varying degrees.  I've enjoyed aspects of both and I've loathed aspects of both, but I never found the contentment which I sought.  Little did I know that I had projected my wish for happiness onto careers that, while perhaps gratifying in many ways, were incapable of giving me true happiness.  And I've learned that more than a few lawyers share my experience.
